Sailing on the SSL47 boats is about much more than preparing established teams for the next competition one and another. It is also a moment where experienced sailors can share their knowledge and give younger athletes their first opportunity to experience high-performance keelboat sailing.
Like a lot of teams SSL Team South Africa is putting this idea into practice during its current training camp. With several young sailors joining the squad, the team is using the sessions to introduce them to the SSL47, test different positions and help them understand the demands of sailing a larger, high-performance boat.

For some of the younger members of the team, this is their first opportunity to sail a boat of this size and complexity. Two young female sailors are also being tested in different positions, giving them the chance to discover where they can contribute best to the team on bigger boat.

This is an important part of what makes the SSL concept unique. The Star Sailors League brings sailors with different backgrounds and generations together, allowing experience to be passed on while giving young athletes the opportunity to step into a new level of sailing.
For the younger sailors, time onboard means more than simply learning how to handle the boat. It is about understanding teamwork, communication, physical preparation and the responsibility that comes with racing as part of a national team.

The goal is not only to prepare for Rio, but to help build the next generation of sailors who will carry their nations forward.
This is at the heart of the SSL concept: bringing sailors together, sharing experience and creating opportunities for athletes from different generations to grow as one team.
Because when they step onboard for the SSL Gold Cup, the idea is simple:
One boat. One team. One nation.
Every sailor has a role, every decision matters and every member of the crew contributes to the same goal, proudly representing their country on the world stage.
From experienced Olympians to young sailors taking their first steps on the SSL47. SSL is a place where experience and ambition sail together on one boat.
